The second of Paddy Goes to Holyhead's live albums is also vastly different from the band's first, Supermegaultraliveshow. That 1994 release concentrated on traditional Irish songs with a mild Celtic rock touch, whereas this 1998 release combines all of the influences that have since adorned PGTH's music. An irrepressible gypsy feel is generated on "The Gipsies Wedding Day" and "Johnny." "Bound Around," "Far Away," and "Johnny Went to the War" are catchy Euro-folk-pop ditties, while "Red Rasta" incorporates reggae rhythms. In short, these are the types of songs that made Ready for Paddy?, E&OE, and Hooray such charming and unique albums. The Irish and Celtic influences are not absent either, however; instead of relying on predictable Irish standards, the bandmembers wrote their own Celtic-influenced pieces like "Doolin" and "Save My Soul." Superb musicianship and songwriting, a varied song selection, and a spirited live presentation make this the ideal album for the Paddy Goes to Holyhead uninitiated. |
